The Heart at Bufuka
The tranquility of Lake Bunyonyi, the beauty of southern Uganda’s lush countryside.
The Heart was Edirisa’s very first location, established in 2002 based on an invitation from Bufuka Primary School. It lies on the school land on the banks of Lake Bunyonyi.
Lake Bunyonyi is the second deepest lake in Africa and is completely safe for swimming as there are no crocodiles, hippos or bilharzia. You’ll see plenty of eagles, kingfishers, bee-eaters and even Uganda’s national bird the great crested crane. The lake is often used for transport and although you’ll see the odd motorised boat most people use traditional dug out canoes – a beautiful sight to see when dozens of them crisscross the serene waters on market day.
We have 2 nursery schools in the area, one at Bufuka, just up the hill from the Heart, and one across the lake at Kyabahinga. Edirisa UK Volunteers are no longer based permanenetly at the Heart but visit the schools and nurseries for specific projects and usually stay at the Heart at those times.
